Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms portrays a cross between two ash trees, set on three hills and three stars above. The field is blue, the trees and ground are green and the cross and stars are gold. These arms are based on family arms dating back to medieval times.

The motto that Bishop Imesch chose is "The Lord is Near," taken from Phil. 4 :5. He celebrated his first Mass in Advent on Gaudete Sunday when these words are proclaimed. The Bishop has a love for the Advent Liturgy and chose these words to express his joy and sense of the Lord's presence.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
