MERTZIG
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on May 25, 1961.
Mertzig became a municipality in 1874, it belonged to Feulen previously. Historically Mertzig belonged to Esch-sûr-Sûre, and the lower part of the arms shows the arms of the Stassin family, Lords of Esch during the 17th century.
The golden colour on top is the symbol of the corn, making the link to the agriculture. The tool shown is the stonecutting and quarrymen tool that worked here. There have been quarries in the area since Roman times, which is symbolised by the Roman Eagle.
