Bishop of Saint Augustine, 1922–1940

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the Bishop is based upon the "canting arms" of Barry, Earl of Barrymore who bears: Barry of six argent and gules. The trefoils added are for St. Patrick, the Bishop's name Patron, and for Ireland his native country.
