IVAN ĆURIĆ

Born : December 1, 1964
Deceased :

Auxiliary bishop of Ðakovo-Osijek, 2019-present; Titular Bishop of Tela

Arms of Ivan Ćurić

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The shield is filled with blue, present also in the coat of arms of Slavonia, in the coat of arms of Slavonski Brod, the hometown of the bishop, as well as in the coats of arms of the cities of Đakovo and Osijek, the seat and co-seat of the Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek. Blue is the color of heaven and longing, which - placed in a Christian context - becomes the color of eschatological hope for the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation for all people. Blue is also the colour of St. Mary. The "Marian" color also bears the distinctive mark of the piety of the Croatian people and the area where the Archdiocese of Đakovo is located, "painted" with numerous, larger or smaller, Marian shrines, churches and chapels.

The Christogram is the ancient symbol of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Around the Christogram is a circle which indicates the communion of the Church, the mysterious connection of all the limbs of Christ's body.

The star shape is also found in the coats of arms of Slavonia and the cities of Đakovo and Slavonski Brod. In this bishop's coat of arms, the star is another Marian sign reminiscent of the Virgin Mary, "the most faithful lawyer, the star and the dawn of salvation, the beginning of a better world," and the "star of a new evangelization," as Pope St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and today Pope Francis. In the life of Bishop John, the Marian dimension is especially related to his dear native places in Slavonski Brod: to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Nativity of Christ the King in Brod Borough, to the new Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brodsko Vineyard, and to the Shrine of Our Lady of Emergency, as well as the parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Prisoj near Tomislavgrad, where the bishops' parents moved from Lake Busko to Slavonski Brod.

The small bars symbolize the Slavonian plain, and in it three rivers - the Sava, the Drava and the Danube, which bound Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem, the area where the Archdiocese is located. The same sign is already found in the coat of arms of Archbishops Đuro Hranić and Marin Srakić. It is also an expression of the connection of the new auxiliary bishop with the heritage of the bishop in Đakovo and the reliance of his ministry on the service of Archbishop Đura, the first shepherd of the local Church.

For his motto, Bishop John chose the words: In the communion of Christ's mission. It was this motto that accompanied one of the great events in the history of the Archdiocese of Đakovo: the visit of St. Of John Paul II. on June 7, 2003.
