Origin/meaning

The cross is the symbol of the Catholic faith. The cross also looks like a windmill. This refers to the Netherlands, the country of windmills, where the bishop was born. It also refers to the Eucharist, by milling the grain to bake bread.

The red is a colour for the suffering of St. James (Jacques) the patron saint of the bishop.
