Origin/meaning
The picks and shovels symbolise the historical significance of mining to the region. The bale
~ stylised bales of commerce and industry (centre) ~ sugar cane (right) ~ foliage depicting the region’s diverse range of flora ~ ribbons of water for the city’s close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef ~ a sun burst for the tropics

Previously the city used arms from about 1899 to 1995. These arms were quartered and showed the same elements as in the lower part of the current arms: sugar cane; bales representing commerce; pick & shovel for gold mining; and ingots of base metals.
