CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

State : California

Seal (crest) of Contra Costa County

Origin/meaning

Contra Costa County was formed in 1850 and was named using the Spanish words for “opposite coast,” signifying its position across the bay from San Francisco.

The Board of Supervisors adopted the seal design on Feb. 4, 1937. The seal shows a graphic design, embodying in a small space the outstanding advantages of the county, including industry, agriculture, shipping and homes.
