39 SERVICE BATTALION, CANADIAN ARMY

Coat of arms (crest) of the 39 Service Battalion, Canadian Army

Official blazon

Badge: Argent a cougar’s face in the Coast Salish style Sable embellished Gules, in base a bar wavy Azure.
Motto: CONCORDIA VICTRIX.

Origin/meaning

The cougar is commonly found throughout British Columbia, where the unit is based. Its head is rendered in a Coast Salish style to honour the first inhabitants of the region. A cougar’s head can also be found on the badge of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group, to which the battalion provides combat service support. The wavy band represents the Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast of British Columbia. Wavy bands are also found on the arms of the province as well as on badges from units that were amalgamated to form the new battalion. The Motto translates as “A good spirit conquers”.

The badge was approved by the Canadian Heraldic Authority on January 15, 2014.
