Bishop of Oudtshoorn, 2010-2018

Origin/meaning

The fish is a symbol of the Christian faith. The scallop shell a symbol of pilgrimage: Bishop De Gouveia has personally followed the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela five times. The aloe represents Oudtshoorn and was used by the diocese as its symbol during the Renew process. It thrives in arid conditions, flowers in winter and has healing properties.

The motto, Unum ut mundus credat, is taken from the prayer of Jesus in John 17:21: "One, that the world may believe."
