Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1936, but are much older.

The arms already appear on the oldest known seal of the town, dating from the late 14^th century. The town belonged to the State of Köln, and the arms are a combination of the cross of Köln, and the crossed keys of St. Peter, the patron saint of Köln.
