Province : Barcelona

Sabdell.png

Official blazon

Escut caironat truncat: 1r d'argent, una ceba arrencada de sinople; 2n d'or, 4 pals de gules. Per timbre una corona mural de ciutat.

Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 26th January 1993.

Canting arms: they show a "ceba" (Catalan for "onion"), that alludes to the first part of the name of the city; this is the traditional sign of Sabadell since 1560, and is also an allusion of the humble origin of the town with its agricultural market (now Sabadell is an important textile centre, the fourth city in Catalonia by population).

The royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or) remind that Sabadell belonged to the Crown; in fact, it was sold by Roger Bernat de Foix in 1366 to Elionor of Sicily, the wife of king Pere III. The king sold it again, this time to the city of Barcelona, and it returned definitively to the Crown in 1473.
