Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 13, 1935.

The cross on the left is the cross of the Templars (Order of the Temple) - to which the town was given (more than once), and who rebuilt the castle. The cross on the right is the cross of the Order of Christ, the successors to the Templars in Portugal after their persecution and dismemberment by Philip of France and Pope Clement V in 1307.
