Quarterly: I. Azure, a lion rampant, its left foot upon a garb and holding in its right fore-paw a staff paleways, the top ending in a cross of three pine cones, all or; a point sinister argent charged with a bendlet gules (Vicariate of North Carolina) ; 2 and 3, Impaled arms: A. of the Order of St. Benedict: Azure, a mount of three coupeaux I and 2 in base, surmounted by a double cross, its arms patée over-all in fess the word PAX, all or; B. Argent, a pine tree on a champagne vert (Haid); 4. Azure, a lion couchant or, upon a champagne argent, in chief ten stars of six points 5 and 5 of the last (Belmont Abbey).

Origin/meaning

The arms of the Vicariate are based upon those of its founder, Pope Pius IX (Mastai-Ferretti). A garb from one of the early seals of North Carolina has been substituted for the Mastai globe; and, in commemoration of the pine tree which also appears on this seal, the lion has a cross-staff ending in pine cones. In the second and third quarters are the arms of the Order of St. Benedict of whom Bishop Haid was a member. The fourth quarter shows the arms of the Belmont Abbey. The founder (Abbot Leo) and his ten monks are indicated by the lion and the ten stars.
