Origin/meaning

These arms are those of the Family (later Dukes) de Rohan, which originated from the town and whose arms are known from seals as early as 1222. Their arms were later also used by the town.

It has been stated that the arms resemble the crystals of chiastolite (also andalusite), a mineral found in the area around Rohan. The original counts liked the precious stones and added the mascles in their arms. Originally the family arms showed 7 mascles, since the 16th century there have been 9 in the family arms.

Literature: Froger and Pressensé, 1999.
