Otero County (New Mexico)
OTERO COUNTY (NEW MEXICO)
State : New Mexico
Origin/meaning
Introduced in 2017.
The Otero County Commission called for a contest in 2017 to replace a seal that featured the New Mexico Museum of Space History in front of the Sacramento Mountains with an F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter in the background.
About 30 students, ages 11–22, submitted artwork. County department heads picked the top 10 entries, from which three commissioners chose their respective top three, then their single favorite.
The new design is a circular logo that depicts a Yucca plant, native to New Mexico.
The White Sands National Monument, a nearly 150,000 acre expanse of gypsum crystal dunes that spreads into adjacent Doña Ana County, serves as the backdrop
The red Zia sun symbol appears in the background. The Zia sun symbol symbolizes the “Circle of Life”: four winds, four seasons, four directions, and four sacred obligations.
