Impaled. Dexter: Per chevron gules and vert, in base three chevronels argent, over all a lily slipped and leaved or (See of Wheeling); Sinister: Azure, on a fess or, fretty of the field, between in chief two stars of six points and in base a crescent all of the second, an endorse also of the field (Swint).
Motto : Ut omnes unutn sint.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the archbishop are based on the arms of the Geschwindt or Swint family's coat which consists of a gold fretty design (lattice work representing a gate) on a field of black. To difference the arms the color of the field has been changed to blue in honor of the Blessed Virgin. The crescent and the golden stars are taken from the arms of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop of Geneva, patron of the Diocesan Mission Band of Wheeling to which Archbishop Swint was formerly a member as well as the founder.

The motto is taken from the Gospel of St. John the Apostle, chapter 17, verse 21.
