Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The Chi Rho in the chief represents Christ and the Alpha & Omega (1st & last letters of Greek alphabet) symbolizes Christ as the beginning & the end.
The ship represents the Church, the Bark of Peter. The fleur-de-lis on the sail symbolises St. Mary. The ship represents the Church of middle and east Tennessee since the hills and streams of these two grand divisions are represented by the lines.
The shell is the symbol of St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of the bishop.
