LOANHEAD

Incorporated into : 1975 Midlothian District Council (1996 Midlothian Area Council)

Arms (crest) of Loanhead

Official blazon

Or, on a fess raguly Vert, between an eagle volant Gules in chief, and a boar's head erased Sable, armed and langued Proper, accompanied by two crescents of the Third in base, three cinquefoils Argent.

Above the Shield is placed a coronet appropriate to a Burgh.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 7, 1952.

Loanhead, as Clerkington or Nicolson, was created a Burgh of Barony in 1669 in favour of Sir John Nicolson, 2nd of that Ilk and Lesswaid.

The arms have the gold and red colours of Nicolson and the eagle recalls that Nicolson of that Ilk has eagles as supporters. The black boar's head and the red crescents in the base refer to the family of Clerk of Penicuik, the present Superiors of the Burgh.

The fess raguly represents a branch of white hawthorn, the traditional emblem of the parish of Lasswade, and its associations with the nearby estate of Hawthornden and its owners, the Drummonds.
