Origin/meaning

The first quarter shows the statue of St. Mary of Altötting, a famous place of pilgrimage in the diocese of Passau. The second quarter shows an eagle and scroll, symbolising the Evangelist St. John, the bishop has a passion for the gospel of John. The third quarter refers to St. Stephen, the patron saint of the bishop, who was stoned. The palm leaf stand for his sainthood, the stones for his death. The fourth quarter refers to Saint Don Bosco (forest in Spanish), the founder of the Salesian Order, to which the bishop belonged. The inescutcheon shows the arms of Passau.
