SAS JOHANNA VAN DER MERWE, SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY

History: A Submarine in Service 1971-2003. In 1999 renamed SAS Assegaai.

Origin/meaning

Named for a Voortrekker Heroine, who survived a Zulu attack on her Party in 1838. Despite suffering more than 20 Assegaai wounds.
