Origin/meaning
Landstrasse means "Country Road" and is symbolised by the figure of St Nicholas of Myra who was the patron saint of the St Niklas nunnery situated on Landstrasse road. After this nunnery, the whole area used to be named "Niklasvorstadt" ("St Nicholas suburb") while the name "Landstrasse" refers to the old Roman road to Carnuntum and was first documented as "Landstrazz" in 1302.
