Origin/meaning

As Auxiliary bishop he used a smaller shield placed on the diocesan arms of Münster. The black cross is taken from the arms of the city of Marl where he was born. The tree 'over the river' is a canting element (Over=across/over, beck means stream). The shell is a symbol of pilgrimage and was also part of the arms of Pope Benedict XVI, who appointed him as auxiliary bishop.

As bishop of Essen the canting part of the personal arms is quartered with the diocesan arms.
