ZMIIVKA (Зміївка )

Region (Oblast) : Kherson

Coat of arms (crest) of Zmiivka
Official blazon
Ukrainian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 18, 2007.

The arms show a number of Swedish elements, as the village was founded in 1782 by Swedish settlers from what is now Estonia. The colours are the Swedish (and Ukrainian) colours and the three crowns are taken from the arms of Sweden. The cross obviously is also based on the Swedish flag. Only a few people from Swedish origin remain in the area though.

The grapes indicate the viticulture in the area.

The arms in the early 20th century

These arms refer to the village of Schlangendorf (snake-village), one of the three German villages, which were settled here in the early 19th century. This village was renamed Zmiivka in the late 1940s.
