Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 19, 1951.

The arms are a combination of an anchor as a symbol for sea trading, the major local source of income, and three lime leaves. The lime tree is a characteristic tree for the island on which Mariehamn is situated.

The town wasfounded in 1861 and named after Maria Alexandrovna , wife of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, as the area was part of the Russian Empire at the time. The first proposal for arms was made in 1861 and shows the arms of the Emperor and the arms of Hessen (Maria was a princess of Hessen), with a red bordure with the initial M, and a free quarter with the arms of the South Finland province. Behind the shield two anchors indicating a harbour town.

The arms were never used.

In 1881 the city received the arms below, showing a crowned letter M and the deer of Åland. The two anchors remained. Only in 1951 the present arms were granted.
