PENICUIK

Burgh

Incorporated into : 1975 Midlothian District Council (1996 Midlothian Area Council)

Arms (crest) of Penicuik

Official blazon

Or, a fess chequy Azure and Argent between in chief two bugle-horns stringed Sable, and in base the figure of Saint Kentigern from the waist, mitred and vested, his right hand raised in the act of benediction and having his crosier in his left hand, all Proper.

Above the Shield is placed a mural coronet suitable to a Burgh and in an Escrol under the Shield this Motto "Pen-y Coc".

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 24, 1938.

Penicuik, the Barony of which was sold by Dr. Alexander Pennicuik to John Clerk in 1646, became a Police Burgh in 1866.

The arms show the gold field and blue/silver chequy from the arms of Clerk of Penicuik, with two black bugle-horns from the arms of the Penicuik family, as represented by Penicuik of New Hall.

In base is St. Kentigern (or Mungo), the patron saint of the town; at one time the parish was known as St. Mungo. The saint is depicted (as in Glasgow) without a halo.

The motto is the Welsh phrase meaning "Hill of the Cuckoo" which gives the Burgh its name.
