Origin/meaning

The Division was formed in 1946 as the 52nd Infantry Division and allocated to the California Army National Guard. In 1947 the Year of the Centenary of the California Gold Rush of 1849 the Division was renumbered as the 49th upon request of the State of California. The Insignia shows a ´49er Gold Digger. They was also called Argonauts hence that nickname of the Division. In 1968 the Division was inactivated.
