Hisotry: Conbstituted as 53rd Troop Carrier wing on 27 July 1942. Activated on 1 August 1942. Moved to the United Kingdom Jan-March 1944. Assigned to Ninth Air Force. Operated in Europe until after V-E- Day. Returned to the US in October 1945. Inactivated 11 October 1945.

Insigne: Shield: Over and throught an ultramarine blue disc, within a light blue annulet piped gold, a torch of liberty fired proper, handle of torch formed of an open parachute argent , surmounted by a C-47transport plane or, in flight, in front of flames of torch; on the field eight mullets or, arranged five to dexter, three to sinister.
