ABILIO MARTÍNEZ VAREA

Born : January 29, 1964
Deceased :

Bishop of Osma-Soria, 2017-present

Arms of Abilio Martínez Varea

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The chalice remembers the Eucharist, "source and summit of the Christian life" (LG 11); The grapes refer to the land from which the Bishop, La Rioja, originated.

In the second quarter the three fleur-de-lys and black bars are the family arms of the bishop.

The castle in point refers to the city of Osma.

The chief represents the Virgin of Nieva, patron of Autol, the new Bishop's hometown. For Mons. Martínez Varea, "the best memories I have of my childhood are from the moments when we made the novena in honor of the Virgin of Nieva, to her I have always entrusted my vocation and my priestly illusion" .
