Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1942.

The golden worm or dragon has been used as the official symbol for the island since the late 16^th century, but the symbol itself most probably dates from medieval times. Its meaning, however, is not known. It is said that it may be derived from a local legend. It is also possible that the dragon is derived from the griffin of Pommern and Rostock.
