Origin/meaning

The arms of Bozen were granted by Duke Leopold of Austria in 1381. Before that the city used a seal with a city gate and a bishop (probably the bishop of Trentino). The arms are probably based on the Austrian arms, being red-silver-red. The origin of the star is not known. Originally the star had six points, but during the Mussolini reign it was changed in 1931 to a five pointed star.

On September 11, 1968 the old arms were restored.
