Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms are based on a Reilly family which arms is described as: Green, two lions rampant combatant of gold, supporting a dexter hand couped at the wrist and apaumee bloody proper. The hand has been removed and replaced by a silver fleur-de lys which is taken from the arms of Russell Joseph McVinney, 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Providence in Rhode Island. Bishop Reilly had the honer to serve as Bishop McVinney's secretary and assistant for many years before assuming other positions of leadership in the Diocese. That service as Bishop's Secretary, Chancellor and Vicar General of the Diocese of Providence, and the Bishop's entire life before being promoted to being Bishop of Norwich, is represented by the silver moline cross which is taken from the arms of the Diocese of Providence.

For his motto Bishop Reilly has chosen the phrase "IN KINDNESS AND IN TRUTH," which is inspired by the 85th Psalm.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
