DIOCESE OF PATERSON (Dioecesis Patersonensis)

Country : United States
Denomination : Roman Catholic

Established : 1937

Arms (crest) of Diocese of Paterson
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The Paschal Lamb, the ancient symbol for St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Cathedral, is based on the words of the Precursor of Our Lord: "Behold the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:12).

The trefoil or shamrock refers, of course, to St. Patrick. The wall on which the shamrock is mounted represents the Lord's protection of the city and is reminiscent of the words of Psalm 127 (1:1 -3) "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard keeps guard in vain". Since the Paschal Lamb also represents the Son of God, the arms are also canting; Pat(rick)-son.
