ELEKTRĖNAI

County : Vilnius

Elektren.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 10, 1999.

Three zigzags on the arms symbolise the electricity of the Elektrėnai power plant. The city was founded specially for this power plant, and even its name was made from the word "elektra" ("electricity"). The building of the city started in 1961 on the place known as small village Lekaviciai. The city got the name Elektrėnai on April 19, 1962.

The power plant needed a lake, and an artificial one was created by damming the river Streva. The new lake Elektrenu Marios drowned a territory of several villages. The eighpointed star in the lower right part symbolise those drowned villages. The star in the upper left part symbolise the present city and its lights.
