Origin/meaning

The name Kalkara was derived from the word "lime" in Latin, since in ancient times (1600s) in Kalkara there was a lime kiln. Hence the motto for Kalkara is "A Calce Nomen", which literally means "From lime is my name".

Half of the shield is gold, while the other half is in blue. The latter represents the blue sea which Kalkara is endowed with since it has two inlets sprouting into the Grand Harbour of Malta. The flame on the blue background symbolises the idea that Kalkara was a lime kiln, since in the extraction of lime, fire through a flame has to be used.
