Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the (arch)diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop. As Auxiliary Bishop only the personal arms were used.

The lion (Leo in latin) is a canting element in the personal arms. The cross refers to the task of a bishop to preach the cross.

The chief is taken from the arms of Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, the red background is taken from the arms of Archbishop Edward Francis Hoban. They were the Principal Consecrator and Principal Co-Consecrator of the Archbishop respectively.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of (arch)bishop.
