MICHAEL MCCARTHY

Born : September 13, 1950
Deceased :

Bishop of Rockhampton, 2014-present

Arms of Michael McCarthy

Official blazon

  • (personal side) Per fess Argent and Gules, in chief a cross of St Michael the Archangel Gules (a cross pomme) and in base a stag Argent attired and unguled.

Origin/meaning

As common in Australian episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms are canting; the cross of St. Michael in the upper half, and the arms of the McCarthy clan in base as a reference to his last name.

The motto “Gloriari in Cruce” (Boast in the Cross) is from St Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians 6:14.
