NEWTON ABBOT (Urban district council)

Incorporated into : 1974 Teignbridge

Origin/meaning

Newton Abbot had unofficial arms. There are two shields which represent the two parishes which merged to form the town.

The left hand shield is for the Parish of Wolborough. It bears a mitre and two croziers, showing connections with the Abbey of Tor. The fleece is a pun on the name Wolborough.

The right shows three barrels for Highweek.
