The new arms refer to the formerly important hunting in the whole area, not only the city of Sandefjord itself. The colours ar ethe old colours of Sandefjord.
The new arms show part of the local whale hunting monument. Origin/meaning

The new arms were adopted in 2916 and became official on January 1st, 2017.

The new arms show part of the local whale hunting monument. The whaling monument is reminiscent of the district's whaling in the period from about 1900 to 1968 and laid the foundation for significant growth, especially in the three municipalities that form the new municipality. The monument has become a landmark of the city, because it is both a spectacular sight and because it refers to a very special history from the time when Sandefjord and the surrounding villages were the center of a significant, worldwide industry. The monument shows the original whaling, when man with the help of a single spear conquered the world's largest mammal.
The arms also indicate Sandefjord as a leading and committed cultural city, as it shows one of the country's leading artists Knut Steen's most beautiful monuments. His art is represented in several places in the city.

The colours are the old colours of Sandefjord.

The previous arms were granted on May 9, 1914.

The Viking ship symbolises the famous Gokstad ship, that was found near Sandefjord in 1880, one of the best preserved Vikings ships known. The whale symbolises the fact that in the late 19th and early 20th century Sandefjord was a main harbour for whalers in the Southern oceans.

The new arms of 2017 were the result of a local competition, in which 38 proposals were selected in the final round. One of the proposals (nr 18 in gold) was finally selected as the new municipal arms.

The proposals were (some colour variations excluded):
