Origin/meaning

The present arms were adopted on August 20, 2003.

The ringed seal is a common local animal and also refers to the main employer in the city, the Seal Shipyard. The blue and the ice sheet refer to the often frozen sea and the clear skies.

The snowflakes are a canting element (Snezh = snow). The anchors refer to the navy and naval shipyards in the city.

The original design was adopted on December 24, 1992 and also showed the Northern Lights in the upper corner. This was later removed.
