Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on December 18, 1970.
The arms show a type of battle-axe. This specific type of battle-axe is known since the 15th century in Norway and many of these axes were decorated beautifully. As especially from the Telemark region many of these axes are known,an axe was chosen as the symbol for the province.
