THOMAS WILLIAM LYONS

Born : September 26, 1923
Deceased : March 25, 1988

Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, 1974-1988; Titular Bishop of Murthlacum

Arms (crest) of Thomas William Lyons

Official blazon

Azure, on a chevron erminois, in chief two lions sejant guardant, in base a quill argent, a mullet azure. Motto: Dominus meus et deus meus.

Origin/meaning

The design has been based on the coats of arms of a Lyons family from Ireland to represent the last name of the bishop. Those arms showed in black a chevron erminois and three sitting lions. The field colour was changed to blue as the colour for St. Mary. The blue star s also a symbol for Mary.

The chevron resembles a builder's square, symbol for St. Thomas, the patron saint of the bishop. The quill is a symbol for his previous role as secretary of Christian education in the diocese of Washington.
