====Origin/meaning====
Umeå became city rights in 1622, and in 1646 a royal letter prescribed that Umeå should have in its seal three reindeer heads. They alludes to the reindeer in the provincial arms of [[Västerbotten]] of which the new city was the capital.
The arms were officially granted on December 30, 1947.
