The arms were officially granted on June 1, 2004.
The mural division symbolizes the former castle and important centre of defence, the red base symbolizes blood spilled in the fight against aggressors. The rook symbolizes longevity and refers to the long history and persistence of Upytė, and the key symbolizes that once Upytė was the administrative and financial centre of Middle Lithuania.
