Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 6th September 1994.

The arms of the town show traditionally the castle of La Geltrú (11th century) and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or), reminding the jurisdiction of the Crown over the town. The municipal charter was granted by king Jaume I in 1274, and Vilanova became a "street of Barcelona" (a town with the same rights as the capital city) by privilege given by king Alfons IV in 1418.
