Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 14, 1943.

Visby received city rights in the early 13^th century and was an important city in the Hanseatic League. The oldest seal of the city dates from 1340 and shows the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of St. John. The field of the shield was covered with lilies, the symbol of St. Mary. Later seals only show the lamb.
