WIEN-ALSERVORSTADT or -ALSERGRUND

State : Wien (Vienna)

W-alserv.jpg

Origin/meaning

Vorstadt means suburb, the "Als" is (or was) the name of a little stream running through what is now part of the 8th and 9th municipal districts of Vienna, Josefstadt and Alsergrund. The Als river was vaulted over already in medieval times - it now is part of Vienna's underground water system.

The arms show a magpie proper, sitting perched on a treestump. The arms are canting, as "Alster(n)" is a dialect word meaning "Elster", magpie.
