Origin/meaning
The arms were granted by letters patent of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, dated 10th July 1452.
The 1st and 4th quarter show the Double Eagle of the Empire gorged with a crown (as a mark of special favour for the loyalty of the town and its citizens). This was an augmentation of honour to the original arms; the 2nd and 3rd quarter display the arms as used from the 13th century onwards. Walls and gates were often employed in civic seals of the Middle Ages, and to distinguish between the many towns using similar arms, the shield of the town's overlord was often put into the seal as well. In the seal of Wiener Neustadt this was, of course, the shield of the Duke of Austria.
