WREXHAM RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL

Incorporated into : 1974 Wrexham-Maelor (1996 Wrexham County Borough)

Arms (crest) of Wrexham Borough

Official blazon

Arms: Ermine, two croziers in saltire Or; on a chief dancettée per pale gules and Or two lions passant guardant counterchanged.
Crest: On a wreath of the colours, Upon a mount vert a dragon gules resting the dexter claw upon a shield Or charged with the character of Mars sable.
Motto: Fear God, Honour the King

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 6, 1857.

One crozier represents Valle Crucis Abbey and the other signifies the grazing land around Wrexham, a crozier being derived from a shepherd's crook. It is said that, Thomas Rowland, who was Mayor in 1868, had much to do with this design, and that the wool sales were then one of the principal industries of Wrexham. The lions are from the arms of Wales.

The dragon is the Welsh national emblem and the symbol for Mars indicates that Wrexham is a mining centre.
