The old mining settlement in the neighborhood of copper mines was promoted to a Free Mining Town on July 2nd, 1528, by Ferdinand I. to the stature of a Free Mining Town.
The municipal coat-of-arms, granted at the same time, shows the figure of St. Catherine, clad in a green robe. She bears in her left hand a sword, in her right hand a branch. The wheel in the base and crest are also symbols for St. Catherine.
On both sides of the Saint are two little shields. The right hand one is decorated with silver mining hammers. The left one bears a mill-stone. The mill-stone was the common charge of the coat of-arms of the Lords of Veitmile, who were the owners of the town at the time when the town rights were granted.
