The Star symbolising the North Star indicates that the Coast Defenses of Portland was the most northern of the Coast Defenses on the US Atlantic Coast.Motto: Terrae Portam Defendamus = We defend the land gate (or port). Later adopted by the 8th Coastal Artillery Regiment.
